Houzz Tour: A Dark Lakeside Home Gets a Modern Makeover - This rustic dark house at the lake needed to alleviate. After several years of life with dark cherry cabinets and outdated wallpaper, the owners were eager for their summer home on Lake Wisconsin to reflect their own style. They spend most of June, July and August here every year, and they wanted to keep the rustic cabin keys at the lake, but put them together in a more modern way. Interior designer Lauren Piskula of [de] luxury design studio has fulfilled the brief with a mixture of materials like barn wood recovered, bright white cornicing and clean lines for a fresh and inviting summer retreat.

A subtle nautical scene sets the tone in the hallway. carefully edited rustic details like driftwood lamp and simple mixture of wood mirror with polished chrome and a padded table. Customers break here to sign the guestbook. The house is certainly in a constant state of flux as guests come and go all summer, said Piskula.

Piskula kept the focus on the best views when on the furniture. At first, we were concerned to place a TV above the fireplace, "she said. "However, the lake view is directly on the chimney wall windows, so we really wanted to keep the focus on beautiful Lake Wisconsin in their garden.

Piskula has the mind of a dark cabin of the house using wooden boards salvaged from a 100 year -old Wisconsin barn that was demolished. A piece of it is seen here on the mantelpiece.

"Whenever someone asked - the owners, friends, family - what their favorite part of the house is, I would say that nine times out of 10 it is reclaimed wood, said Piskula.
Get the stain on the wood just took a few tries. The winning look came from a warm brown stain base with an aged gray wash.
