Houzz Tour: A modern house in Guernsey with a surprising past - "We wanted to create a very flexible adaptable space," says the architect Jamie Falla M House Formerly a packing shed. tomatoes, now is a house of three bedrooms, designed simply to celebrate the roof of the building soaring, original woodwork and sunny. "When we saw the crowd in 2010, it was just a big open space with metal coating on the outside, "says Jamie. "The plan was to keep the existing structure - the envelope -. And preserve as much as the open space "
Planning permission already exists to convert the building into a two-story house, with a floor of rooms above. "It would have obscured the high roof, however, says Jamie. "You would not have been able to read the history of the building." So to avoid this, Jamie and his team designed a box that is in the large open space, which contains the kitchen, storage room, room d water and the utility region. Opposite, a glass platform hovers over the living room and both areas offer additional accommodation on the upper floor. Jamie then added a wing walk-containing bedrooms, two bathrooms and a study.
Jamie was the design of the property for sale, not for a client, so he wanted to make it attractive to anyone, a family with young children to a retired couple. "It had to be flexible, but do not have a customer also gave us some freedom, Jamie said. 'This is, essentially, an experimental building.'

a metal-clad shed is now a beautiful wooden building. "It is a very light wooden structure," says Jamie. He chose the English chestnut for coating, and left untreated. "The exhibition in the UK and the UV light damages any climate or lacquer finish says Jamie. "so we left the woods as it is. it will become black in places, gray in others and become more impaired.

granite by the door of entry is all that remains of a wall that ran around the property. "It is a beautiful reminder of what was there before," said Jamie. the window of this side is proud of the property to create a window seat inside. "you can sit there with a book to enjoy the morning light," said Jamie. "you have to be able to enjoy the different times of day in different parts of the house .

An extension ground floor houses the bedrooms and two bathrooms. A corridor that sank off the main entrance leads to this part of the property, and a glass wall can capture lots of natural light.

The kitchen is contained in a box that is in the living area open plan. Behind her there is a laundry room, bathroom and a built-in storage space; above is a study room or game. You can walk around it and access to the living space on each side. The box is covered with large Do Uglas fir tips that we used on the floor, "says Jamie. 'The upper floor is completed with tempered glass.

the same Douglas fir was used for flooring and coating the inner box pops up on the beautiful, integrated handrail of the stairs. "It is touching a soft piece of wood that you rise up and down in the house," says Jamie. "The carpenters who worked on this project were real craftsmen. They were amazing, so we had the pleasure push them to create something wonderful and see them enjoy the process. over time, the rail will acquire a patina of all people who have used it and lived here. "details like this race through the home, "said Jamie. Fluid Little details that bring a sense of harmony. "

flat Platform offers a more intimate living space ( "breakout space," as Jamie calls it) and the circular window is a playful touch. "We all have small patterns and ideas that have been planted in us as children, Jamie said. "This is going through the differ- shaped windows on Play School. is the round window! I normally never wear a circular window, but it was a nice way to replace two small high windows that were there originally.

Corridors running both sides of the "box" kitchen. It runs along side the garden wall, where huge windows allow plenty of light. "We are interested in the place," Jamie said. "We tried to capture the southern light and also the morning light through these immense theatrical windows.

Making the most of natural light was a pilot project, but Jamie has also prioritized electric lighting, too. "We still have a lighting designer on each build, he said." it is important that night the house glows as a whole. "

the house is full of brilliantly designed details that do not scream for attention, but give the depth and character building. "The way the master bedroom windows look to the house, for example, says Jamie. "They create a courtyard ambiance. These kinds of details are quite subtle and you may not notice them at first, but they all add to the experience of living here. "
