My Houzz: A postwar Revamped Home full of light, color and character - Janene Waudby and her husband, Julian, had a longstanding relationship with their house for many years, they lived in the next house. When this place, which is larger than their original house and has a garden, went on sale, they jumped at the chance to buy.
The post-war property in desperate need of an overhaul of the 21st century. "Initially, we had to do a little, said Janene, but they ended up opening on the ground floor, off the sloping roof, reconfiguration of the first floor, and the addition of a second floor with a terrace. Now the house is a generous warm welcome full of light and color.

"If we open the space completely, you would have no natural developer" says Janene. Because of the height of the ceiling, shelves add storage without oppressing space.

Janene and Julian love of sailing and the sea shines through in their choice of accessories and art. Ships works can be found in almost every room, including this one. The painting over the fireplace was commissioned for the unfortunate Captain Bligh in the 18th century, who was famous abandoned at sea in the Mutiny on the Bounty.
A wood stove in the living room provides additional heat. "We wanted a functional focal point here," says Janene. The Defra approved stove is modified with an additional air intake, which means it releases fewer emissions.
The alcove shelves are illuminated from below ground level. "It increases the sense of space to the ground," says Janene because it eliminates shadows that appear differently under the shelves. The original plates in here were damaged, so the couple replaced them with wide plank oak engineered.

Although the couple did not increase the size of the kitchen, they flashed by opening up as much as possible. The white cabinet to the left of the living room door conceals a full pantry, with the rest of the kitchen cabinets designed to accommodate it.

Janene designed the kitchen, then ordered carpentry business contemporary Qubic Solutions to build it. "We gutted the old kitchen," says Janene. "There was a door leading to the outside, but we shut that off to increase the workspace." She also added two pairs of open shelves next to the stove to maximize the sense of space and create additional storage for books and cooking pots. The worktops are in oak.

the oak chairs are objects of the family of Julian, so he and Janene commissioned a custom table to match. The clock majestic grandfather is another legacy, including Julian inherited from her grandmother.
The folding doors open onto the patio and the garden, which required a major renovation, too.

the property is on a hill, the house sits at the bottom and at the end of the garden to reach the top. Because the hill slid slowly toward the house, Janene and Julian had dug the back, then added new soles and a retaining wall. In this way, they managed to create a spacious, multi-level patio.
An old table and chairs, matched with a little chiminea, create the ideal space for relaxing on long lazy summer evenings.

... and after. The space has been brightened significantly. "We renewed the staircase, which was a bit rotten, over the ramp was closed," says Janene.
The couple also created a cloakroom off the hallway and increased storage space, adding a flip-top bench and under-stairs cupboard. "I try to make sure that everything has a place to go, said Janene.

the master bedroom is quiet and uncluttered space with a dark gray wall feature creates a dynamic contrast to the neutral color palette.
The pendant light was made by the artist Tabitha Bargh, who works with the corrugated cardboard.

the second bedroom is decorated similarly to the master bedroom, with its own colors and solid wood. The deep blue feature wall is particularly striking. "A feature wall is all about creating a framework for other things that you can put against it," says Janene.
The room consists mainly of heritage pieces like the bed and the wooden chair. Janene turned the chair in a bedside table and placed an old wood door-book on it. "You should always have books by the bed, it is absolutely mandatory, 'she said, laughing.

one room has been converted into a home office. The elegant mahogany desk is another of the couple's family objects with a story behind it. Julian's father worked in Nigeria after the war. "When the family moved to the United Kingdom, they brought all their household furniture mahogany boxes," says Janene. "Once they had unpacked, they made furniture on cases of mahogany.

a small utility room is hidden in the bathroom, hidden behind the bath.
The small candle light hanging in the staircase is another artistic creation discovered by Janene. It has a color composed of two pieces of clear polycarbonate , between which you can put anything you like. Currently, it has old photos of the mother Janene.

in the hallway leading to the second floor, a display of lights and shapes catches the eye immediately. Shoal iconic light by the husband and wife team Scabetti is unique because each is made with a different number of fish.

the upstairs bedroom is a large, open space and light. "We are very lucky, we have a house on a hill, we have a breathtaking view of the city, said Janene. "My goal with this room was to create a great place to make people smile." While standing on the terrace and look across the rooftops, it compares the feeling of "being on the deck of a ship.

since the views from this room are so impressive, Janene decided to keep the simple furnishings. The area is mostly dominated by the iconic and customizable Zettel'z lamp by Ingo Maurer, the couple personalized with letters. "It is fantastic at night when it is lit, said Janene.
The instruments in the room reveal musical talents of the couple. Julian plays the accordion, while Janene plays the concertina and guitar.

originally, three Georgian houses sitting on this site, but they were destroyed during the second World war and a trio of houses built in their place. The woman who sold their house Janene and Julian lived throughout the period, the loss of his Georgian house and earn a postwar.
