Despite the setting page open, living "compartment" style manages to create intimacy in these great open spaces. The kitchen, for example, flows to the dining room and separate living room, so no one will ever be "disconnected" but the layout also gives scope to get out of it. It is truly the best of both worlds. "We wanted to be able to withdraw the children and vice versa, but keep that connection and family interaction," Bill said.

an outer wall has the potential to close in space and make great window almost redundant, but a clever feature wall lattice manages to create the illusion of a distant scene. It opens not only space, it adds a quality quiet in the room, too.
