Houzz Tour: A Mezzanine Bright Apartment in Edinburgh - Find a property that offers space and the features they were after the perfect place was a challenge for the architect Jonathan Thomas and Women, in particular they were the first buyers. When they came in this one bedroom apartment in an old nursing home of the 19th century in the center of Edinburgh, however, Thomas tapped into some potential that perhaps only an architect could spot.

"the 15ft-high ceiling was flat and three large windows," says Jonathan Thomas. "Immediately, I thought I should be able to get a mezzanine floor here. It is a listed building, though, so I went and spoke to the planners of the best way to get planning permission, which I always find very useful. They said as long as we used a glass balustrade that will not disrupt the view of the cornices, it should not be a problem. "
Planning Permission was duly granted and the couple began to transform the apartment.

as the kitchen and bathroom were already in place and the couple was on a tight budget, they decided to live with the existing decor and plow their money into the creation of striking mezzanine.
"instead of interior redesign, we built on what was there," said Thomas. "I designed the whole floor of the mezzanine to hang a steel frame that hangs outside walls. It was quite a feat of engineering to do it without making changes that were visible from the outside.

as the couple has a family and tend to accommodate all major holidays like birthdays and Christmas, they chose to keep the ground floor lounge open space. The dining table is the focal point of this room and is illuminated by long hanging lamps industrial style falling dramatically from the double height ceiling.
"It was essential that we would be able to seat 12 to 14 people comfortably," says Thomas. "We had a table built specifically for the reclaimed beams chamber. This table has character, just like the building, and we are not bothered if she gets a ring mark from a wine glass on it or is scratched. All these additions remind us of the good times we had around him, "he added.
"The chairs came from a local thrift store. We tried to balance modern and chic furniture and shabby here, to be in agreement with the two different architectures of the place.

a couple of chairs were hidden in the corner of the dining area, facing the fireplace, creating an intimate seating area.
"When we looked at the apartment, they had the dining table in front of the fire, hiding from view, which was a shame. We had always wanted an old chesterfield with a carpet by fire and now we have a Thomas laughed .

the couple decided to maintain existing single kitchen units, because they do not affect the minimalist style of the apartment. They then had the whole place painted pure white.
"We tried a white with little pink, but with all the wood here and so many competing materials, we decided in the end to keep everything simple with a white low gloss" says the architect.

Thomas designed the staircase to be quite simple, so as not to impair the glass ceiling and impressive loft space. As the torque required to squeeze the maximum storage space of this regime, it incorporated deep cupboards under the stairs.

"Like many of our budget went on the construction of the mezzanine, we had limited resources when it came to furnishing the apartment, so we have largely opted for a mix of staples Ikea and charity is, Thomas says. "We found the glass coffee table on Gumtree. It was a real bargain and ties in so well with the glazed surfaces of the mezzanine.

the couple wanted a clear difference between public and private downstairs space, so they used color to define the two areas. "We went for a light blue mural here, Thomas said. "We wanted to play on the difference between the two areas: the living area large, bright and spacious and the bedroom, which is quite small. So here we focused on the comfortable elements and added painted bedside tables and a mirror that we found in a thrift store. "
