Houzz Tour: A colorful and conversion Church Quirky - This 150-year old church stands proudly in Exeter, South Australia, and catches the breeze from the beach and port nearby. Architect and interior designer Kirby Stewart bought the property in 2013, and began to improve levels of comfort and energy efficiency throughout the house. As the tallest building in the region, it receives little protection against extreme winds.
'You can literally feel the wind blowing into the building when I moved in first,' Kirby said. He filled the gaps in the building structure, installed an insulating sheet 5kW PV solar system and Air-Cell, and repaired the windows. While previous owners had kept the integrity of the building intact, it took a lot of maintenance, outdoor updating and adding some practical comfort.

At inside, in addition to removing unsightly curtains and sealing gaps, the ground floor has also been relatively stable. Indeed, the interior walls were already roses - a favorite color of Kirby -. Green and yellow

In the middle of the ground floor, the set-up room echoes the symmetrical design of the church. Kirby said he intentionally placed the blue three-piece suite, a native of Denmark, and extra chairs around the circular Nanimarquina carpet, like a mirror means that symmetry. This also creates a space for intimate meeting in what is otherwise a very large room.

Off the living area is that Kirby affectionately called the "library area". This area creates a point of interest in the large open space smaller, to ensure that it does not feel cold or vacant. "The bright colors of the carpet also eliminate the risk of appearing inhospitable space," says Kirby.

An aluminum suspension lamp second hand, directed at the table rather than the faces of people, provides soft lighting for dining. The lamp also ensures the table is a night shelter, again to create points of interest across the vast space.

the kitchen lies in what was the raised pulpit of the church, giving him a view of the ground floor lounge. "Cooking seems a nice use of this space!" Said Kirby.

a white enamel stove unsightly originally stood on the kitchen wall, making it impossible to access the first two cupboards under the work plan to end cuisine. A solution was provided by removing a shelving section of the partition wall and the installation of coating stainless steel resistant to heat. A vertical gas stove was then installed, which faces the main kitchen joinery in a galley style.

The white original woodwork remains intact, with the exception of a cabinet 450mm wide which was removed and replaced with a dishwasher. "The woodwork had aged well, said Kirby," but the lack of contemporary facilities of the kitchen was in desperate need of attention. "
Two additional cabinets were modified to accommodate two convection ovens.

Except for the simple addition of a mirror from Ikea Dream above the existing pool, the bathroom has undergone no change. "He had a self-adhesive mirror Cheap and nasty-looking on the wall," says Kirby.

The hall bath can also be accessed from the patio to the rear of the house.

In the center this open, the top level is the bedroom. "As the space around me is huge, it never feels anything less than entirely comforting, Kirby said. "The dark, wood ceilings make the space really feels like a cocoon.
To make this more than just a place to lay his head, Kirby added a sofa on the side of the bed to encourage relaxation. "My cat loves the winter day when the sun streams through the skylight above," says Kirby.
Despite being open to the living room below, one can not look in the room, so it remains private.

From other side of the stairs is a working studio, which boasts skylights facing north and east-facing lead-light windows that have a view on Port Adelaide.
'The studio was in bad taste when I bought the church, "said Kirby. "There were pastel green terrible curtains blocking skylights and stained cream carpet had definitely seen much better days." Where it is now simple, plywood shelves, a large open cabinet white melamine has also covered the Wall and much of the work of covetable wood. In addition, an exhaust fan hideous (and broken) does no justice to the circular top window where he sat.
The removal of the curtain, a wardrobe and a fan (the window was restored) introduced the natural character back to space, while new carpet charcoal refresh the look and feel .

the patio overlooks the back garden, which faces west and supports coastal extreme winds. The space previously housed a weed and harvest a new deployment lawn that was not good.
"Since I do not have kids or a dog to worry, I was able to treat this space as purely decorative, Kirby said. The trees, however, were planted to help shade the west end of the building from the sun of late summer, which Kirby hopes to improve the thermal efficiency of the building.

The garden south originally had only two trees and a massive crop of nettles. Unfortunately, the two trees had to be removed because the two were planted too close to the neighboring walls and have caused major structural damage to their properties. The silver lining was that the garden designer Mark Ellis, Kirby enlisted to help, had a blank canvas to work with.

Ellis was responsible for turning the south garden in a summer haven of shady peace that would also attract birds.
Coast banksia ( B. integrifolia ), a species that grows along the east coast of Australia, and crepe myrtles ( Lagerstroemia indica ) were planted to provide full coverage in the garden. Knowing they would take time to grow in size, the fence was painted orange to add instant relief and a sense of fun to the area. First, it provided a nice contrast to growing plants, but has since been pleasantly surprised by the foliage.

Kirby wanted the private garden in a sunny area protected winter days and a shaded area for summer evenings.

The property is located on a busy intersection, but fortunately has a high masonry wall. The two sides of it are painted in Raspberry Sorbet Morado 'Haymes, or bright pink that all the inhabitants like to call it. "As a fan of bright colors, I knew that I love her, but was a little unsure of how the public would perceive, said Kirby. 'In fact, the majority of people had the same reaction as I did the day I returned to find my painters applied the first layer :. Surprise, smiles and laughter "The neighbors agree that this adds a sense of fun in the area.

the scope of the concrete is broken by the garden, which will be denser over time, and the addition of mature cactus in pots which came from the former residence of Kirby.
