Open the door of a particular bungalow, and discover a fascinating mix of contemporary and traditional that represents the character of the area.
Sara Imhoff with Mention Architecture and Design and her husband Jeremy Imhoff renovated their bungalow 1918 to create a comfortable balance between the original and the new features construction. the Imhoffs completed most of the renovation of their 1918 bungalow on their own, redesigning, remodeling and construction between their day jobs to architecture, studying for exams and the beginning of their families. Six years, a toddler and twin surprises later, the dynamic duo has completed a full renovation.
The couple love the house has its own history; as both Jeremy and Sara grew up in newer homes, living in a space like this is exciting for them. Built in 1918 and moved to this particular plot in the 1940s, the house has character that new houses can not match. "There were many things that needed to be updated, but we made a point to keep some of the existing features, said Sara.
The couple decided against a completely open space plan keeping the existing wall between the kitchen and living room, yet amended the space feel more open the vault of the ceiling.

smaller window has been established from the old attic entrance. When Sara and Jeremy took the loft entry and built the new part of the window, they saw that the view would be looking up to a power line, so they frosted window for beautiful diffused light.

This sketch shows their plan to the vault of the ceiling in the living room. Two existing windows and an entrance to the former attic has become a place for new skylights. "We decided to capture the attic windows and turn them into sculptural light sources that serve the living room, said Sara.

The skylights also hidden recessed lighting to create a soft atmosphere at night. They open for ventilation in summer.
Sara and Jeremy designed low cabinets with a long horizontal window in the kitchen. He paid tribute to the shape and proportions of integrated existing windows and single glazing in the adjacent lounge.

Tearing down the wall between the kitchen and the dining room has two bedrooms a little extra space and ease the flow of traffic before the kitchen door, dining room, living room.
The brick fireplace is in the original house, but is now connected to the extraction of the cooker fan.

"We did not know how twisted our house was, says Sara. To counter the odd angles, the couple installed new components completely level and away from the area around where possible. The cabinet floating kitchen is a good example of this: since the existing ceiling has a slope, Jeremy and Sara held down box, away from the surface to make the slope less noticeable.

rooms have new roles that the couple's children started arriving. To keep things simple, the Imhoffs stayed away from color schemes or anything drastic childrens that would be difficult to change if they want to convert all the back room to the bedrooms of adults.

the biggest change to the way Imhoffs lived was incorporating a rental apartment in the basement.
in 2010, the year of their first child arrived, the recession was still booming, but they took the initiative to use the remaining savings they had and provide a small studio in their unfinished basement. Although it felt like a huge gamble at the time, this led to an additional income to help feed the extra mouths and allow Sara to work part time.
