When the team PEEK architecture were hired, the brief was simple: a makeover-top to toe. "Our client bought the house to repair it, and he needed a complete overhaul. It was obvious from the first visit that he had large proportions and ceiling heights and was structurally sound," says the architect Georgina Turvey.
as the reorganization of the space and define the major structural changes, PEEK has also contributed to the nitty-gritty of planning applications. "planning has been obtained to create an extension back at the lower and upper floor, as well as new windows and roof lights, "said Turvey.
in terms of structural changes down, go open was the key." most of the walls removed to the lower-ground floor to create a kitchen / dining / living area open plan, "says Turvey." We have also lowered the structural slab to give more head height there. On the upper ground floor part, a wall of the spine [the load-bearing wall separating the front and rear living rooms] was withdrawn.
"Changes to the upper floors were more minor, the rooms were already very well suited as bedrooms and bathrooms."

The kitchen features well thought l lighting, giving it a bright exhilarating sensation any time of day or night. in general, the lighting was crucial in this house, and carefully designed throughout. Dick Hamilton previously worked as a designer of lighting, so she used her expertise to get it just right.
"in my opinion, the light is fundamental and it is very important to use properly fitting to accentuate the design details," she said. "The use of multiple channels, we have created layers of light all on dimmers, so the levels can be adjusted to the mood of the customer or activity he does.

in the TV room, PEEK has decided to get rid of the usual corridor often located next to the stairs in Victorian terraces, and use the space under the living room instead. An ingenious shelving seat where the wall could have been. This opens the room and avoid the narrow sense or poky few terraces that era.
"We separated the stairs and a TV room with an oak wall dark shelves, which has a mix of mirrors and glass panels, so there are views through it, "said Turvey.
The result is unconventional, but works wonderfully, adding the dark drama, a sense of space and, of course, many practical shelves.

This is a great house for parties and having more customers. "The customer is very sociable and has friends around a lot, so spaces to get together were important," said Turvey. "He also likes its large TVs, so we had to find ways to accommodate them without feeling them as if they were simply glued to the wall. There are also lots of storage provided throughout, so it is easy, hopefully, to keep the place tidy. "
The back of the living room has lots of light through the window." It was a timber, the custom glazed extension overlooking a small adjoining terrace. It is very important to find someone who knows what they are doing and to hire a glazing installer is registered Fensa "says Turvey
Dick Hamilton adds." Getting the right window treatments in this area was extremely important. Having a large glazed surface really illuminates the space and floods the room with beautiful light most times of the day, but the disadvantage is to manage solar gain, especially in the summer and glare and the lack of privacy. the use of an electric blind sailing alleviated these problems and added softness to the space which provided excellent contrast against the dark wood.
