Houzz Tour: A Traditional New England farm with a modern extension - Southern Coastal Maine is home to the quintessence of the city of New England Kennebunk, where the barns and the country are located just down the road lobster shacks and salt water. Scott and Karen Benezra bought a piece of land here for themselves and their two children, with an antique farmhouse and barn about to be demolished. Instead of letting them go completely to waste, the architect hired Benezras Caleb Johnson to deconstruct structures, save the wood rafters, links and beams to create two new structures within the same footprint.

Light and complete the modern corridor. To create a "transparent quality," Johnson said, he looked for a local blacksmith to rethink the traditional cable railing system, which usually comes with a lot of material. "Instead of using thousands of dollars and dozens of pieces of equipment, we used a tensioning mechanism for crimping the cables, he said.

to fill the gaps between the wooden planks risers (and to meet the construction requirements), they added simple steel staples.

Raw steel support columns were left exposed, showing the drawing of the steel plant, to improve the industrial aspect. "This is a broad area of materials - 200 years planks forming the ceiling, still bearing the marks of the original craftsman; Polished concrete floors; steel exposed structure; and recovered midcentury modern furniture, "says Scott. "It all comes together and feels like it was meant to be.

the main level shows appreciation owners for raw materials, that are simple and affordable. They left unfinished reclaimed wood (saving time and money for coloring), and mixes easily with crude steel and polished concrete. We knew from the outset that we would have to get creative if we are to achieve the level of detail we wanted within our budget constraints, "Scott said. "The use of recycled materials seemed to be a natural way to stretch our dollar.

Caleb thought I was joking when we arrived at the kitchen budget, but I thought I'd give a shot fire on my own, "says Scott. After feeling uninspired by cabinet ideas and discourage costs, he set up the furniture itself, starting with basic Ikea cabinets and recycled pine resurfacing the original barn. "We kept very simple and let the antique wood speaks for itself, he said. So they thought it could be a temporary solution, they fell in love both the look and the price (about £ 2.600), and decided to keep it.

upstairs, the gateway uses the same ramp own cable system, like the stairwell, keeping the minimal equipment and low cost. Recycled beams in the lobby, which leads to the master bedroom, have been wired for jam jar lights before installation. Johnson says he uses these devices jar when it really needs to save money - they cost about £ 4.50 at Home Depot

In the master room, exposed rafters mimic the construction of the barn, while the image capture windows large parts of the surrounding forest. "It is exactly how they used to build barns - leaving any statement, Johnson said.

for their master bathroom, the Benezras drove to Connecticut to buy a birthday Kohler bath of a trader who had taken on a renovation. "I t had been in the bathroom of the second house and someone probably had water in twice," says Scott.

Scott hit all the local sales and craigslist post he could. One day he responded to an ad for a Sub Zero refrigerator and eventually bought salvage rights to an entire house materials in Weston, Massachusetts, through a nonprofit organization called greenGoat, which specializes in materials of houses being renovated in recovery or demolition.
From there, he and Karen got almost all their plumbing fixtures, electrical appliances, kitchen appliances (both Sub-Zero refrigerator and Miele dishwasher were still under warranty) and sanitation, including this unit guest room vanity.

a turquoise sliding barn door that opens to the dining room in the game, was another rescue find. "We did not take a single door throughout the house," Johnson said.
The Benezras spent about £ 150 per square foot, while most of Johnson's customers spend closer to £ 230 per square foot for a similar level of detail. "It was really a study in affordable design," Johnson said.

AFTER while all the original wood got redirected, new equipment was needed for the siding. The Benezras mixed in a new cedar that Johnson preferred architect for his "special profile", which makes it more interesting and easier to blend in with period materials.
